Turn your iPad into a treasure map with Assassin's Creed IV Companion app

If you're planning to find buried treasure and sail the seven seas in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, then you're going to need that most essential of pirating tools: a map. Rather than having you pause the game to rifle through sub-menus, though, Ubisoft has provided iPad owners with a companion app which transforms your tablet into a treasure map. Now available from the App Store, the Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag Companion app features a fully interactive map of the Carribean waters featured in the game. It allows you to view objectives, track your progress - even set real time waypoints for your ship to follow.   As well as using the app to help you navigate while you play, yo…

Is Assassin's Creed - Identity the mobile Assassin's Creed game we've been waiting for?

Is Assassin's Creed - Identity the mobile Assassin's Creed game we've been waiting for?

I'll keep this brief: Ubisoft has just soft-launched Assassin's Creed - Identity in Australia and New Zealand. Unlike the card games and companion apps Ubisoft has served up to iOS gamers in the past, this fully 3D "action RPG" is a close to a full-blown Assassin's Creed game as we've ever seen on mobile. Like its console counterpart, the game lets you explore ancient cities, leaping from rooftop to rooftop before stabbing-up some unsuspecting nobleman. Watch our hands-on with the soft-launch version of Assassin's Creed - Identity below. You can download the game right now if you live in Australia or New Zealand. The rest of the world will have to wait until 2015 for the game to go glob…

OMG Pirates! Review

OMG Pirates! Review

From the developer that brought you mass zombie slaughter in Zombieville USA comes the next beat'em up action adventure from Mika Mobile, OMG Pirates. Slaughtering pirates en masse couldn't be more fun, but that doesn't mean it'll be easy. The controls are a simple affair, which not only gives Pirates an old school feel, but makes the game easier to deal with on the iPhone. You move your nimble ninja with a virtual analogue stick and jump, counter, combo and flip out with the aid of t…

Batten down the hatches and brandish your decks as Fabled Game Studio announces Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage

I have never been the biggest fan of roguelikes in the past. Hades and Binding of Isacc gave me room to soften this stance a bit, but on the whole, they are not my bag. However, give it to me in a card game, and I am interested. Throw in pirates, like Fabled Game Studios’ announced Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage, and I am hooked. If you need more than pirates and card games then you are very hard to please, but we shall endeavour nonetheless. Pirates Outlaws 2: Heritage is a roguelike deck builder where you hit the high seas, build a deck of fantastic abilities like summoning tornados or bonking people with a sword, and then promptly die and do it all again.  When you start a run y…

Land, ho! Ubisoft to release Assassin's Creed Pirates on December 5th

Get ready to haul anchor, hoist the mainsail, and prime the cannons: Assassin's Creed Pirates is coming to iOS next week. A spin-off to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, this seabound adventure puts you in control of a sleuthing seadog named Alonzo Batilla. It's up to you to maintain Batilla's vessel and look after your crew as you sail across the Caribbean in search of the answer to an ancient - and probably profitable - riddle. Though the character interactions are handled via crude text bubbles, you will get the chance to steer your ship and do battle with other pirate vessels in real time. Early impressions are promising, with the game comprising loads of different combat mini-games…

The game is controlled through a fairly intuitive slider bar which is used to move Ezio at different speeds while 3 context sensitive buttons provide options from standard fighting and jum…

Chillingo is releasing base building strategy game Gang of Pirates later this year

Chilllingo is partnering with Nitro Games to bring a new social strategy game called Gang of Pirates to the App Store later this year. The premise for Gang of Pirates will be more than familiar to veterans of Clash of Clans and Boom Beach - though with some rum-swilling nautical debauchery added to the mix. You must build a stronghold on an island of pirates, and developing your base lets you better train and deck out your seafaring troops. Building your defences better fortifies the settlement. That whole thing. Once you're happy with your fortress, its time to attack your unfortunate island neighbours. Sending your fleet to battle other players switches the game to a tactical battle v…

News Wrap-Up | 13th September 2013

Apple officially revealed the shiny new iPhone 5S and the colourful iPhone 5C to the world this week, marking the beginning of another week of news reports showing cold Apple fans camping on a dirty street with a faraway look in their eyes. However, it was the game Apple used to show off its swanky new A7 processor which had us pitching tents of our own. You'd best start flexing your swiping finger, because Infinity Blade III is due out next week. The newest instalment in Chair's wildly successful action RPG franchise, Infinity Blade III offers two new playable characters whom you will guide through no less than eight new game worlds. And, with each of these worlds containing more square…

Hands-on with Plunder Pirates: Halloween Update, the spooky update for the premier piratical strategy management game

I've been playing Plunder Pirates since July, and even did the review for Pocket Gamer. Though I don't think I'd ever get bored at looking at crystal clear blue oceans, swaying palm trees, and pirate antics, there's a scary new update for Halloween. Here's a look at some of what's new (as well as a very thinly disguised attempt to show off how cool my island is).…

Friday News Wrap-Up 7 September 2012

I can’t believe we’re already this deep into September already - I guess that means I’ll need to work up a Top 3 list (hint, it may be out on Tuesday), but in the meantime I have reviews and news to dispense, so lets hit up the Friday News Wrap-Up for the 7th of September, 2012. Assassin's Creed Utopia - Sim City with stabbingDespite the vague 'Winter' release date, the Assassin's Creed spin off title for iOS, dubbed 'Utopia', is looking mighty fine. I'm also happy to report that in a continued effort by Ubisoft to 'disconnect' from always-on Internet designed games, the only link between this title and Assassin's Creed 3 is that it will effectively lead up to th…

Assassin's Creed™ - Altaïr's Chronicles Review

Assassin's Creed was a huge title in 2007 on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Now Gameloft have created a port of the game for the iPhone. The premise is similar. As the assassin Altair, you are eluding guards on the rooftops of the middle east, assassinating targets on your way to acquire an item of great import. How does it compare to its console counterparts? The controls are well mapped but end up being a problem. To move Altair, there is an analog stick on the touch screen. There are a…

Steam Pirates Review

Steam Pirates by Fried Green Apps is an enchanting new RPG for your iPhone that's as whacky as it is fun. If you're worried you'll be locked in to days of grinding gameplay, you'll be happy to know that this is also relatively short title, but once you're done you'll definitely wish there was more. The game's controls are a mix of touch-based platforming and menu-driven combat sequences common to the RPG genre. Enemies freely wander each of the game's dungeon environments, but v…

Splash of clans: Seabound RTS Plunder Pirates heading to iPhone and iPad this year

Splash of clans: Seabound RTS Plunder Pirates heading to iPhone and iPad this year

Game-ho! The first trailer for start-up studio Midoki's debut iOS offering Plunder Pirates, an "epic online multiplayer strategy game," has just hoved into view over the horizon. Comprised of a number of console developers who have decided to take a swim in mobile waters, the developer claims Plunder Pirates will allow you to build your very own pirate island, and then do battle on at least seven seas with other online skallywags. Apparently inspired by the "fair" free-to-play structure of games like Tiny Tower, the team has opted to make the game a freemium experience, much like comparable multiplayer base-battler Clash of Clans. Though you can sail solo if you choose, the game wi…
