Learn how to play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite with AppSpy - Part 7
While the cat's away the... something... something... Basically James was away for this episode so Harry and I run amok. A couple of members of the AppSpy / Pocket Gamer community join us in our ongoing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite quest, and show us their awesome armour sets while they lead us to easy victory after easy victory. Plus there's a lot of talk about pants. I think James might get mad when he gets around to watching the video below. Did you forget to watch the last episode? Rectify that.…
Hands-on with Kitty Powers' Matchmaker, ooh err!
I adore Kitty Powers' Matchmaker. A dating game fronted by the gorgeous Kitty Powers, Matchmaker has a cheeky (and very British) sense of humour, and combines its sense of sexy silliness with unmistakably solid gameplay ideas. Helping young lovers find their “special someone” is a great deal of fun, and even if finding the perfect partner is tough, trying to do so never fails to paint a big grin across your face.…
Genre Busters: top 5 best Dreamcast games on iOS
The Dreamcast was originally release in America 9/9/99, so to celebrate Danny and myself decided to take a look at the greatest Dreamcast releases available on iOS. In this video, which we recorded from our live Twitch stream, we made some crazy money, drove remote controlled cars about a supermarket, launched mice in rocket ships, spray-painted all the walls, and went rocket jumping. Schedule too hectic for the full hour of hijinks? Here are the links to check out the various games we streamed. 1. Crazy Taxi2. Re-Volt Classic3. ChuChu Rocket4. Jet Set Radio5. Beben III…
Want your butt to fall off? No? Then don't watch these unbelieveable Terraria videos because your butt will fall off
Terraria's an amazing game, we said as much in our video review. But it can get weird sometimes. No more is this evident than in the fan-made videos you'll find on Everyplay. The following are the best videos that demonstrate this wonderful weirdness, curated just for you, courtesy of your pals at AppSpy. When you wish upon a star... Beating Skeletron Prime? Tough. Beating Ocram? Also tough. Beating both at the same time...? Nice one Yoshi. This kid is not impressed at all with what he gets for defeating The Wall of Flesh. Do you kiss your momma with that mouth? "Come on Jumpy. That's your name. Your name is Jumpy. Because you jump so much" Got a cooler video for Terraria?…
Hands-on with On The Run, the explosive arcade-y endless-driver
The really tough part of On The Run is knowing when to slipstream behind an upcoming car, and when to simply concentrate on not smashing your vehicle to pieces. Nip behind another driver for just a moment, and you'll be rewarded with a burst of speed that puts you that little bit closer to the next checkpoint, but drive up the back of them and you'll lose all momentum, killing your run. Did I mention On The Run also lets you transform into a tank and destroy everything around you for no good reason? It's pretty cool.…
Hands-on with The Sleeping Prince, the super fun snooze-a-thon
In The Sleeping Prince, a princess has been kidnapped by an evil villain. It's up to you, the prince of the land, to stop him and “get the girl”. Shame you're in the deepest sleep of your life, eh? Click play on the video below for sleepytime shenanigans in this physics-based platformer.…
Hands-on with Galaxy Falcon, the free-to-play space shoot-em-up
After creating the rather lovely utility app Morning Kit, Yooii Studios is back on the App Store with a new game: Galaxy Falcon. It's a shmup, it's freemium, and it's unfortunately a little bit dull, lacking the spark of the great shooters already available on iOS. Galaxy Falcon is out now globally, but here's my quick hands-on to walk you through the basics.…
Road Rash plus Full Throttle: that's Wild, and this is its first trailer
Wild and Free Games has announced it's working on a new motorbike racer with plenty of fisticuffs, and it's called Wild. It's chunky and bold and violent and arcade-y and seriously just watch the trailer below because it already looks absolutely bad-ass. The game's confirmed to be free-to-play and will come to PC / Mac / Linux for sure. It's also destined for iOS and Android (and XBLA, PSN, Wii U) so long as the developers meet certain goals on their crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, which you can see right here. Wild looks pretty darn cool, and I'm loving the blend of Full Throttle and Road Rash, so I've got my fingers crossed for the mobile version getting the green light soon.…
Hands-on with Goblin Sword, a mix of Castlevania, Legend of Zelda, and awesome
You read that title right, Goblin Sword contains elements of the legendary Konami platformer, Nintendo's second instalment featuring Link, and a whole lot of excellent. The controls are quick to respond, and there are so many secrets to uncover, if your platforming skills are up to the task. And if the highly detaled pixel art in Goblin Sword doesn't win you over immediately then you and I can no longer be friends.…
Hands-on with Fotonica, in which I spend half the video picking my jaw up from off the floor
It's not hyperbole when I say that Fotonica is one of the most beautiful games I've played all year. Click play on the video and you'll see that that's immediately evident. There's something mathematically beautiful about wire frame models, perhaps its the raw geometry of the anatomic? The gameplay itself is a known quantity, but it's well-made, and that's what counts when the visuals are as striking as they are. What do you think of the gorgeous Fotonica? Let us know, below.…
DEVICE 6 and Year Walk dev may need to delay new game The Sailor's Dream due to iPhone 6 announcement
Simogo's work is exemplary, and we've been steadily becoming more desperate to play The Sailor's Dream ever since it was announced. But there's a chance we may have to wait a little longer than we anticipated. Simogo's artist / writer Simon Flesser has taken to Twitter to express dismay at the new resolutions of the upcoming iPhone 6 models. This morning, he said "2 new resolutions that are nowhere near the old ones, and expectations of your games looking good on all devices, is killing my enthusiasm." He followed up by writing "I am incredibly frustrated with the platform right now". However, most concerning for fans of Simogo's games, were later tweets; We don't want to release in…
Hands-on with NERF Hoops, the flipping fun foam-filled flinger
If you missed out on the Paper Toss craze a few years back, then Backflip once again has you covered, this time in a free-to-play format and with a NERF licence chucked in for good measure. NERF Hoops is pretty fun when you start getting into it, and comparing your score with mates is always neat. If you've played the game it's based on to death then there's not too much new for you here, but for everyone else, the game is well worth closer inspection. Take a look at my hands-on with the game below, and watch as I get an epic score on the hardest difficulty level.…
Genre Busters: top 5 hardcore platformers on iOS
The platforming genre is almost as old as gaming itself, and you aren't a truly “hardcore” gamer until you've bested a fiendishly tough test of jumping. Being 1337 gamers ourselves, James and I have our own personal favourites when it comes to platforming on mobile, and in the below video you'll see the best, most punishing, totally gruelling platformers to ever grace a touchscreen. Too busy jumpin' to watch the full hour? No problem, here are the links to jump to the content you want to see. 1. Kid Tripp2. League of Evil 33. Rayman Fiesta Run4. Mikey Hooks5. Super Crate Box…
Hands-on with Space Age, the retro-inspired space adventure
Pocket Gamer's Mark Brown has gone and had a sneaky peek at Space Age, an adventure game with a classic schlock sci-fi aesthetic, and pulpy narrative. Click play on the video below to see the game in motion, then sound off in the comments and let us know if you're excited for its release.…
Final Fantasy VII is coming to iOS and Android in October, sort of
Here at AppSpy, we're big fans of Square Enix's mobile JRPGs, and we've been waiting patiently for the Japanese giant to announce the legendary Final Fantasy VII for mobiles for quite some time. That wait is finally over. Well, kind of. Square Enix has announced Dive In for mobiles in Japan, a cloud service that allows you to play games streamed over the Internet. First games on the block for distribution? The tepidly received Final Fantasy XIII and stone-cold PlayStation classic Final Fantasy VII. Much like the ill-fated OnLive, Dive In doesn't download the game to your device for play at any time. Instead you constantly stream a video feed of the game running on a supercomputer, whic…
