Hands-on with Air Supply SOS, the wonderfully authentic homage to Speccy days
Air Supply SOS feels like it's a real labour of love when you go hands-on with it. It's a straightforward arcade action game where you can move your character about the stream left and right, as well as thrusting upwards whilst shooting. To say it's inspired by games like Jetpac is a bit of an understatement. But Air Supply SOS is definitely more “homage” than “clone”. After the ridiculously awesome 80s cartoon trailer released a few weeks back, I didn't think another Angry Birds Transformers video would ever get me quite as hyped again. I thought wrong. Minutes ago Rovio released its gameplay trailer for Angry Birds Transformers, and any potential fears that it might be a boring re-hash of old ideas have transformed and rolled right out the window. Slowmo headshots, suicide bombers, exploding barrels, gun-porn: this Kill Shot trailer has it all
The headline says it all really: the new video for Kill Shot has just about everything you need in a trailer for a free-to-play first person shooter that's big and explosive and completely over-the-top in its depiction of armed combat. Most of Kill Shot seems to revolve around being a sniper (although other weapons are available), and carefully lining up your sights to terminate targets with extreme prejudice. There are slowmo replays when you off someone in an especially epic way, and with the Watch and Share feature you can share the gruesome replay with your mates. It's out now, go grab it. Pumped BMX 2 has me pumped, and will get you pumped once you watch this video of Pumped BMX 2
There's a trailer for Pumped BMX 2 out, and it has me frothing at the mouth in anticipation. I adore games like Touchgrind Skate 2, True Skate, and so on, and Pumped BMX 2 looks like a bike-themed take on those games, but in 2.5D. There's a flexible control scheme and a realistic physics engine in place that allows you to do loads of different tricks, 50 levels with 500 challenges, plus achievements and leaderboards. There's a lot of love for the Anomaly series here at AppSpy, with our James being particularly enamoured by Anomaly 2. Drugs are bad, mmmkay? But dealing drugs is worse. If for some reason you do have the urge to peddle highly addictive, life-destroying, terrorism-funding contraband then Underworld: Drug Lords will let you do that in the comfort and safety of your middle-class suburban home. The trailer for the game may be all about glorifying a pretty reprehensible crime to a funky soundtrack, but it also has a bit 24 seconds in that looks a heck of a lot like the opening of Eastenders. Air Supply SOS looks just about as batty as an actual ZX Spectrum game, trailer sports 'rubber pleasures'
Described as an "homage to Jetpac from the old ZX Spectrum days", Air Supply SOS features arcade-oriented action, plenty to see and collect, and the visuals and music are vintage Speccy. Low-res shapes, bizarre mash-ups, basic colours, and pop culture references: this is the real deal, and the music sounds wonderfully authentic, due to being made on an actual ZX Spectrum. Hands-on with The Drive - Devil's Run, the brand new old school racer
With genetic links to Test Drive and the original Need for Speed games, The Drive - Devil's Run had me interested the moment I knew it existed. I went hands-on with an early-ish build of the game, and as you can probably tell from the video, I think it's already bang on the money as a loving homage to classic 3D racers from the 3DO and PSX days.
