Pokemon GO is having a Halloween event, here are some other events it should have
Pokemon GO is having its first event. And as you might expect it’s themed around Halloween. Everyone loves Halloween nowadays. It wasn’t like that in the past, but I bet none of you really care about the past so I’m not going to dwell on it. Anyway, the event will see you getting more candy, and change the regularity with which different spooky Pokemon will appear in-game. It’s a pretty cool idea, and a great way to pull players back into the game. You can watch the trailer for the Halloween content just below this paragraph. But don’t go running away once you’ve finished with it because there’s even more excellent content coming up after the video…
Sports that deserve their own version of New Star Soccer
New Star Cricket is the sort of sequel to New Star Soccer. As you might be able to tell from the name, it’s about cricket rather than soccer. I mean it hardly takes a genius to work that out, does it? It also doesn’t take a genius to figure out an article to write from that progression - other sports we’d like to see getting the New Star treatment. And that’s exactly what I’ve done, right here, right now. Without further ado, here is said list. Actually I’ll put a bit more ado in here, because otherwise this paragraph will be too short and it’ll make the whole article a little less aesthetically pleasing. Golf Hire a caddy, figure out the best…
4 things right with the Nintendo Switch
Oscar’s gone. And what a grumpy so-and-so he was, leaving you with a list of reasons the Nintendo Switch is rubbish. How’s that for leaving on a high? I dunno, kids nowadays. I mean sure, I agree with him, because I’m a miserable hack with hardly any joy left in the part of my brain that contains all the joy. And I don’t know how the brain works. Clearly. Anyway I thought I’d start my time at AppSpy by bashing out something positive. So here are 4 reasons the Switch might not be rubbish. I’m definitely going to try and stay positive throughout. Definitely. Nnnnnnnnng. Here goes. It’s nice to have two things Let’s be honest, you can never…
4 things wrong with the Nintendo Switch
So Nintendo finally revealed the NX - and it's called the Switch. But let's gloss over the somewhat obvious naughty jokes for now, and concentrate on the console itself. It's rubbish. I mean, we knew that already. The Wii U failed, the Wii was hated, and further back than that it doesn't bear thinking about. And as for the Nintendo Switch? Well, it's basically a Wii U but, because it has to be mobile, it has worse graphics, right? It has a number of problems. Five of them, in fact. Here they are! It'll cost a bomb With the very nature of being a 'console in your pocket', you've got to squeeze a lot of power into a very small space. That, of course, sends the cost skyrocketing. We've a…
The 5 best card battlers on mobile
Card battlers, card battlers, card battlers, as far as the eye can see. It seems the CCG craze is truly in full swing, with pretty much every major franchise releasing either a new side series or a card game companion app to a larger mainline game. Why is that? Well, probably because they look nice, mainly. Plus there's a very tactile feel to a card battler that a tablet facilitates beautifully - fanning a set of cards in front of you wonderfully replicates the real life action, and can make you feel like a badass professional poker player. Even if this poker player is faced with a load of cards with zombies and killer plants on, sure. But given every game dev and their mum is bringing ou…
5 cool things we learned from the Pokemon Sun and Moon demo
Pokemon Sun and Moon are mere weeks away from release! And to get us all excited, a special demo version was released on the Nintendo eShop today. But what have we learned, now we've played it? Well, these five lessons, that's what. 1. 3D is gone completely When the 3DS was released, Nintendo made a huge deal about how 3D was going to change gaming forever. While the technology inside the device is impressive - especially in the New variants - that bold claim has never really come to fruition. It certainly hasn't changed the way we play games, with pretty much every other developer having given up on the tech in favour of VR. And Pokemon was one of the highest profile franchises to start…
4 better cowboy games than Red Dead Redemption
You're probably already aware, but Rockstar - developer of hit games like Manhunt 2 and Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis (plus some rubbish indie game called Grand Theft Auto) - has been teasing a successor to its hugely successful 2010 cowboy sim Red Dead Redemption. I don't know why it was successful, mind you. It was 25 hours of shooting chickens and riding horses to the middle of nowhere. Not exactly my idea of fun. But anyway. For some reason people are excited for what looks to be a sequel. But there are better cowboy games out there, I swear to you. Take a look at these four cowboy / western games that are infinitely better than Red Dead Redemption 2 will ever be. 2-Bit Cowboy…
4 reasons why Red Dead Redemption 2 would be better on mobile than console
Remember Red Dead Redemption? The horribly overrated open world game released in 2010 that was basically Grand Theft Auto but not as good? Well it looks like we'll soon be forced to endure a sequel. Developer Rockstar is teasing what looks like a second (alright, technically third) entry in the Red Dead franchise. So far we have the R* logo on a red background, and more recently a picture of seven men walking towards us at sunset. Not exactly conclusive evidence, but it's hard to imagine this indicating anything else. Let's take the plunge and take the torment as read - let's imagine there really is a Red Dead game coming next year. Wouldn't it be better on mobile? You don't agree?…
3 reasons why you shouldn't buy PSVR!
Finally. FINALLY! After what feels like a lifetime of waiting, a VR headset is at last available to the public. What's that? Samsung Gear VR and HTC Vive have been out for months now? And nobody's noticed? Oh. And Nintendo kinda did VR with the Virtual Boy back in 1995? And that failed too? Oh. Well then. Maybe PSVR will do better? In all seriousness, PSVR is the most likely of all of them to succeed: it has the backing not only of Sony, but also a huge existing platform and the market leader of the current generation in the PS4 and PlayStation brand as a whole. You don't need another expensive box to use PSVR, you don't need to build a £1000 PC, you don't need any huge technical…
More boardgames that deserve the Really Bad Chess treatment
Really Bad Chess is a really good game that’s sort of like chess if you only vaguely understand the concept of chess. It’s worth picking up, it’s out now, so give it a crack, see what happens. But it also got me thinking - what other classic boardgames should get the Really Bad treatment on mobile? I mean that’s the sort of question we’re all asking ourselves right now, yeah? Eh, I’m tired, let’s just get on with this. Really Bad Monopoly To be honest when I play Monopoly it’s really bad anyway. I mean I’m pretty much the worst venture capitalist ever, I just want everyone to be happy. Here have my money, buy yourself something nice…
4 iPad and iPhone games you could play instead of Pokemon Sun and Moon
Pokemon Sun and Moon is coming out soon. Lots of other sites are posting hands-on previews and all that standard hype-cycle nonsense. Not here at AppSpy though, oh my word no. I mean there are two reasons for that. First I haven’t played the stupid game, and second we’re an iOS focused site so it wouldn’t really make any sense to try and get content out of a game we don’t cover. Or would it…? If, like us, you think that the only proper gaming on the go involves playing on a device that you can make phone calls with, then this is the Pokemon Sun and Moon article for you. Because it’s about games that are a bit like Pokemon Sun and Moon that you can play…

5 iPhone and iPad games you could play instead of Gears of War 4
I actually quite like the Gears of War franchise. Like, it’s pretty much my definition of a guilty pleasure, and one of the few things that might actually make me consider buying an Xbox One. I’m not going to, but at least I’m considering it. Anyway, this frankly spectacular preamble is to lead us into the fact that Gears of War 4 came out yesterday. Or the day before. I haven’t really been paying attention if I’m honest. Anyway you can’t play Gear of War 4 on mobile, because of reasons. But you can play some games on mobile that are a bit like Gears of War 4. Here’s a list of them. Enjoy it. Or don’t, that’s entirely your perogative.…
Games other than Pokemon GO politicians should be playing in parliament
The Norwegian Prime Minister has played Pokemon GO in parliament not once, not three times, but twice. Which is pretty cool. It must be nice to have a Prime Minister that plays games and isn’t instigating overtly fascist policies. Ho hum. Anyway it got me thinking about which mobile games politicians could play when they’re supposed to be doing important but boring things like running the country. That’s not even that big of a logical leap, it just sort of made sense. So here’s a list of the ones I thought of in the time I pointed my brain in the direction of that particular problem. It’s by no means a comprehensive list, because quite frankly that would be co…
4 mobile games you could play instead of Mafia III
Mafia III has just come out on consoles. I’m only telling you this because this part of the article is an introduction to the themes we’re going to be dealing with later on. I was pretty sure you already knew that Mafia III was out on consoles, you’re smart you are. Anyway, Mafia III isn’t out on mobile. Well, there’s a free to play RPG version but I’m not counting that because, well who counts things like that? No one cool, that’s for sure. And you and me? We’re super cool. So I thought I’d make you a list of games that are a bit like Mafia III that you CAN play on your phone or tablet. Because that just seemed like a good id…
