The Monday Musing - Nintendo Switch and the future of mobile games
Mobile gaming in its current form has been around for a while now. Touchscreen play has become the norm for a generation of players, and midcore strategy titles constantly top the charts. But change is the nature of everything. We either stagnate or we move on. So where is mobile gaming likely to go next? Well if you listen to Nintendo then mobile gaming is going to start to blur into the console ecosystem. At least that’s what the big N wants to happen with its recently announced Switch console. It’s certainly an interesting take on a new style of mobile play. A gadget that you can take out with you and continue the same gaming experience whether you’re on a bus or plug…
Friday rant - Where have all the good games gone?
Look I’m not going to beat around the bush here. I just wrote a list of what I think are the five best games that came out on iOS this week. They’re good games, don’t get me wrong, but here’s the kicker - almost all of them came out elsewhere before they landed on mobile. F1 2016 isn’t a direct port, but it’s a squishing down of the console experience to fit on mobile. Rome: Total War, Steamworld Heist and RunGunJumpGun have all had other homes before they were welcomed into the mobile fold. That leaves us with Titan Brawl. Which is fine. Titan Brawl is a fine game and I won’t hear too many bad things said about it. What I will hear bad things said…
4 TV series that deserve their own mobile game like Battlestar Galactica
Battlestar Galactica: Squadrons is a mobile game based on, you guessed it, Battlestar Galactica. Now let’s all take a moment and figure out what sort of content we can create from that. OH WAIT I GOT IT. We could write a list of other TV series that we’d like to see turned into mobile games. That’s not going to take that long, and we’ll probably get a few giggles out of it as well. Feel free to add your own in the comments. Or just stand outside my window at 4 in the morning shouting up ones that I’ve missed. I’m really going to appreciate that. No honestly, I am so lonely. Castle I had to watch a lot of Castle because my ex-girlfriend really liked i…
4 reasons that F1 2016 is super exciting
F1 2016 is out on the App Store right now. And that’s a pretty exciting thing to type. So exciting in fact that I’ve decided to create a list of reasons that it’s exciting. And no, before you ask it’s not all going to be “because cars is good”. I’m actually putting some thought into this one. So you’re welcome. Er, paragraph three. I could just fill it up with car noises, but if anything that’s going to prove paragraph two wrong. I think my favourite racing driver is probably Nigel Mansell. Because I respect a man who can pull off a stache in a helmet. That sounds a bit dodgy. Okay, list. It’s not free That’s exciting in…
5 reasons we're excited for Galaxy on Fire 3 - Manticore
Galaxy on Fire 3 - Manticore is just on the horizon. It’s super close. So close we can almost taste it. Like some sort of distant dreamy sandwich we can’t wait to drive our gnashers into. But it isn’t here yet, so I figured I’d just write a list of reasons why I’m excited about it and let that just sit here until the game actually turns up. Hard-hitting journalism, amirite? Oh also there’s a new teaser trailer for the game. Give that a watch and then we’ll dawdle into the list. Space I love space. I think of all my favourite places to have a fight, space is right up there. Mainly because it’s so massive and ridiculous. Like, it just goes…
3 games that need to be turned into movies like Neko Atsume
Neko Atsume is getting a live action film. Let that sink in for a bit. Real live cats, real live action. It’s basically the greatest thing that has ever happened in the history of the entire universe. And if you disagree I hate you. Obviously though that got me thinking about other mobile games I’d like to see turned into live action movies. Because that’s how the thought process of a millenial games journalist works, I guess. So here, in list form, are some other games that should, and probably will, be turned into films. If you’ve got your own suggestions stick them in the comments down there are the bottom of the page. Flappy Bird Imagine the tension. Imagine…
4 consoles that need to get the NES Classic Mini treatment
The NES Classic Mini is a teeny tiny version of the NES. It fits in your pocket, that’s how small it is. Like a phone, but less powerful and more a NES. Wow this is a strained opening even by my standards. Anyway, you can attach it to a TV and play 30 classic games on it. Which is pretty cool. And Nintendo made it as well, which is even cooler. So using my brain I decided to think up a bunch of other consoles I’d like to see really, really small versions of. After deciding that, I realised the best way to display this information was in a list. Therefore I have written a list. It is just down there. I hope you enjoy it and tell all of your friends about it. Atari Jaguar My…
3 mobile games that might just scratch your Mass Effect Andromeda itch
Right now everyone is talking about Mass Effect Andromeda. And rightly so, because it looks ridiculously amazing. And that’s coming from me, that guy who doesn’t really care about all that much. But it did get me thinking (stop groaning in the back) about games on the App Store that are a bit like Mass Effect. So I’ve gone right ahead and written a list of those games in order that you can read it and then go and play them. I mean you don’t have to do any of that, but it would be nice if you appreciated the effort I’ve put into thinking up and then writing this list. Maybe give it a thumbs up or something, I don’t know, i don’t really know how the…
4 reasons Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare would be better on mobile
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is apparently a big deal in the world of non-mobile games. Do you like shooting things and explosions and jet packs? Well then this is the game you’ve been waiting literally one year for. But as we all know, it’s way better to play games on your phone or tablet that on silly cumbersome joypads. I mean, come on, whoever thought they were a good idea? Not me, that’s for sure. So here are a bunch of reasons that CoD: IW would be better on your phone. Some of them are serious, some of them are not serious, some of them might even be complete nonsense. But life is a journey, and we’re taking this part together. It’ll fit in your po…
6 ways you can tell if you're a mobile gamer
How do you know you’re a mobile gamer? It’s a good question, and one that we’re asked on a daily basis by the people we see out on the street. Is it because of the shape of your face, is it because of your shoes? Who knows!?! Well, we do. We know all about stuff like that at AppSpy, so we thought we’d compile a handy list for you to make sure that you know too. No, I don’t know why this is happening either. I just know my feet are cold and I’m using a tethered 4G connection and I want this whole charade to be over sooner rather than later. If you agree, then let’s get to it. You play mobile games This is probably the biggest giveaway. Think back…
4 heroes that need to be in new iPhone and Android game DC Legends
DC Legends is a game about DC legends punching each other. It’s one of those RPGs that’s not quite an RPG, but looks quite nice and a lot of people seem to enjoy. And enjoying things is important, right? Anyway it’s chock full of heroes and villains from the DC Universe, so I thought I’d have a look through my encyclopaedic knowledge of DC Comics (wikipedia) and pick some of the weirder goodies and baddies I’d like to see in the game. You might agree, you might disagree, they might already be in the game, but in the end we squeezed some content out of the flimsiest of ideas so we can all go home feeling satisfied about a job well done. Ragman Ragman is a m…
Not playing PinOut? Here are 3 reasons you should be
Pinball. That’s old hat, right? The sort of game that you can’t even start to fit in your pocket. WRONG! Because PinOut has just been released and it’s like pinball reinvented for cool people like you and me. Of course by cool people I mean cool people who like to play on their phones. And who like really bright neon lights. And who are reading this. If you’re not reading this then I’m sorry, but you’re not cool at all. Anyway, here are a bunch of reasons you should get your fingers on PinOut as soon as is humanly possible. Which is pretty soon in our connected digital world. It’s pinball for the now times The game is like a mix between pinball a…
5 reasons you should play Gear.Club right now
Gear.Club is a game about driving cars. And I’m not talking about those sensible cars that you or I can afford, I’m talking about the sort of cars that cost more than a house. More than a hundred houses, depending on where you buy your houses from. But why should you be playing it on your iPad or iPhone? Well that’s a good question, imaginary person who asked me that question, and I’m glad that you hypothetically asked me it. Here are a bunch of reasons that should answer your question that you didn’t ask but I did. Lord have mercy am I ever jet-lagged. The Cars They’re so vroomy, they’re so incredibly out of our reach, they’re so likely…
5 iOS games to play now The Walking Dead is back on TV
Look, The Walking Dead TV series is back. I’ve never seen any of it, I’m sure it’s lovely, and if you’re a fan then congratulations, I’m super happy for you. All I am is an SEO shark, swimming in the briny waters of the interwebs trying to snaffle up some unwary click fish. Wow that was strained even by my low standards. Anyway, The Walking Dead, zombies, iOS gaming, basically you can fill in the gaps and figure out what the next paragraph is going to say if you’ve been paying attention. Here are some iOS games with zombies in them because The Walking Dead is back on TV. Do people still watch TV? Or do they just illegally download everything and then moa…
